While the majority of persons usually forget and shun away from those incarcerated in our local prisons, telecommunications provider Digicel has not forgotten that these persons exist.

On Thursday December 1^st, Marketing Manager Juno DeRoche and Marketing Officer Justin John journeyed to Her Majesty’s Prison (HMP) where they handed over food hampers and hams to incarcerated persons who had taken part and won two competitions, a quiz and an essay competition.

The competitions were held as part of World Aids Day celebrations which were organized inside the prison by Councilor at the National Aids Secretariat (NAS) Roseclair Charles.

Winning the first place prize (a hamper) in the essay competition was Luke Williams. In second place was Tyson Spencer while female prisoner Kawana Wilkins was third. The prisoners wrote on the topic ‘The Role of the community in the fight against HIV/Aids’. Taking the hamper for placing first in the quiz was Cordelia Stephens.

Councilor Charles said that quiz questions were based on discussions that she held with prisoners during the HIV/AIDS awareness sessions that were held in the prison.

DeRoche said that the contributions to the prisoners were Digicel’s way of aiding in the rehabilitation process.

“We wanted to help them see that although they may be incarcerated there is still hope”, said DeRoche. 

The prizes were distributed during the first ever World Aids Day Concert that was held inside the male penal institution on Thursday December 1^st.
